President Donald Trump says he has no desire or intention of returning to a “racist” New York, where he was born, but is confident he can be president of the United States.
In a new interview with the Washington Post, Trump said he had never considered leaving New York City in his lifetime and would return to the city “for the love of it”.
“I had no desire whatsoever to leave New York.
I have no reason to leave,” Trump said.”
I don’t know if I’d want to go to another city, but I have a lot of love for New York.”
He added: “You have people who are wonderful people.
I love them.
You can’t get any better than New York for me.”
The president also defended his decision to ban refugees from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US, which has led to protests.
He said he has been “absolutely and unequivocally” opposed to the ban, which was announced in January.
“My intention is to make it very clear that I’m not a racist, and I’m a person of color,” he said.
“And I think people are looking at me and saying, ‘I don,t understand’.”
But Trump did say he would like to “do things differently” than the previous administration.
“It’s not that I don’t like New York,” he told the Post.
“I love New York and I love New Yorkers.”
The interview comes as Trump is embroiled in a war of words with his predecessor Barack Obama, whose administration barred citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries from the country for a period of four years.
Trump’s executive order temporarily barred entry to the US for refugees from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen, and the US has said the move has prevented terrorists from entering.
The White House has said it was a legal decision taken in response to terrorist attacks in the US.
Trump has repeatedly called the travel ban a “disgrace” and a “banana republic” and has accused the Obama administration of lying about the impact of the ban on jobs.
Trump did not specify how he plans to implement the executive order, saying only that he “will be very, very good at it” and said “every country that I’ve been in, I’m going to be able to go into”.
“The only country I’ve ever been to is New York or Washington DC, and that’s going to happen,” he added.
